Ten Small Deeds, Ten Big Differences!
“There are no days on which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days” Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) [Bukhari]
No good deed is too small! We’ve compiled a list of ten good deeds for the best ten days – can you take on our 10 days of Dhul Hijjah Challenge?
1st of Dhul Hijjah: Lift the life of an elderly person
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: “If a young person honours an elderly person on account of their age, Allah appoints someone to honour them in their old age.” [Tirmidhi]
Caring for our elderly peoplnot only fulfils an important duty, but also enriches our communities, invites blessings, and nurtures continuous compassion from generation to generation.
On this blessed first day of Dhul Hijjah, why not volunteer to help an elderly person in your community? You can also sponsor an elderly person through Penny Appeal’s award-winning Adopt A Gran appeal – bring a smile onto the face of our vulnerable elderly people for just £10 a month.
2nd of Dhul Hijjah: Empower with Education
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) urged us to seek knowledge, from the cradle to the grave. Education is the passport to tomorrow; it is one of the greatest gifts you can give to the next generation.
There are young people all around us looking for guidance and support; can you reach out to a friend or family member and help mentor or train a young person? Whether it’s teaching them how to pray or how to ride a bike, your presence, care and attention can make a world of difference to a child’s life.
You can also help to build a school with Penny Appeal’s Education First appeal: provide an Education Station for a child for just £100! Every contribution, little or large, makes a world of a difference for future generations.
3rd of Dhul Hijjah: Help a child in need
Our beloved Prophet (ﷺ) said "The best house among the Muslims is the house where orphans are well treated." [Ibn Majah]
Expressing kindness and mercy to young people is a Sunnah of the Prophet (ﷺ), in fact Anas ibn Malik said: “I never saw anyone who was more compassionate towards children.”
Every act of kindness towards children is a charity. You can add to this in these blessed days by sponsoring an orphan child with Penny Appeal for as little as 50p a day. Penny Appeal’s OrphanKind appeal offers vulnerable children everything they could need with meals, clothes, healthcare, and education, delivering them from an endless cycle of poverty into a life of prosperity and peace.
4th of Dhul Hijjah: Give water – the gift of life!
As the Prophet (ﷺ) taught us, the best charity is to give water [Ahmad]. During these summer months in particular, thirst can be difficult to bear for many who don’t have the luxury of tap water on demand.
A bottle of water to a friend, neighbour, family member, or better still, perhaps a homeless person in need, could make a world of a difference to someone’s day.
Why not go one step further and build a well with Penny Appeal for just 83p a day and give the blessed, life-giving gift of water to an impoverished family? Check out our Thirst Relief appeal to find out more!
5th of Dhul Hijjah: Share the light of the Qur’an
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said, "The best among you are those who learn the Qur'an and teach it.” [Bukhari]
What better way to connect deeper with Allah (SWT) than to help a child in their understanding of the Qur’an? Spare some time today to share some Qur’an with your son, daughter, niece or nephew! Why not play some Qur’an for your family as you drive in the car or before you sleep?
You can also sponsor a Hifz Orphan with Penny Appeal for just £21 a month. This unique orphan care programme includes a comprehensive scheme that allows each child to learn and memorise the Holy Qur’an.
6th of Dhul Hijjah: Feed your soul as you feed the hungry
Today, why not help to fight hunger and poverty in the UK by volunteering at your local food bank? If you can’t find the time this week, at least buy some extra items from your local store and donate it to a nearby food bank.
With the rising cost of living, tens of thousands of families are struggling to put food on the table. Your small act of kindness makes a big difference in the lives of those living in your area.
Be sure to also donate to Penny Appeal’s Feed Our World appeal – feed the hungry for just £1 a day, or £365 for the whole year! As well as serving nutritious meals and life-saving food packs, every donation helps us provide those in need with sustainable and empowering routes out of poverty.
7th of Dhul Hijjah: Lighten the burden of a refugee
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said, “The example of the believers in their affection, mercy, and compassion for each other is that of a body. When any limb aches, the whole body reacts with sleeplessness and fever.” [Bukhari]
Refugees overcome unimaginable challenges in the hope of giving their families a better chance at life. Could you extend even a small gesture of kindness to help refugees in the UK? Perhaps you could volunteer with a local refugee charity, donate some food or toys to a community centre, or even write to your MP to tell them you want Britain to do more for those fleeing persecution. Never underestimate the world of difference you can make to those who are trying to build a home in what can feel like a strange and confusing new place.
Donating to Penny Appeal’s Emergency Response is another way that you can provide emergency support to displaced, hungry and sometimes desperate people who have fled disaster and conflict. Feed a family in urgent need for just £50 a month!
8th of Dhul Hijjah: Invest in a Masjid
On these blessed days, be at the service of your local community by helping out at your mosque. Get in touch with the mosque committee and volunteer your time; maybe you can offer a professional service or even just offer to clean the masjid and know that Allah (SWT) will reward your sincere service in this life and the next.
You could also donate a prayer space as part of Penny Appeal’s The Mosque Project for just £100! By having a small part in the construction of a Mosque in a developing country, you can transform an entire community for generations to come.
9th of Dhul Hijjah: Smile!
Our Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: “Smiling in the face of another is an act of charity.” [Tirmidhi]
Follow this beautiful Sunnah and bring warmth and cheer to your neighbours and loved ones by sharing a smile with them today. Eid is almost upon us, so there is plenty to smile about!
You can also continue to spread this neighbourly feeling by donating to Penny Appeal At Home – our UK projects include feeding the homeless, supporting victims of domestic abuse, caring for the elderly, helping refugees and responding to emergencies throughout the country. Every contribution, little or large, makes a huge difference. Support a family in desperate need here in the UK for just £30 a month!
10th of Dhul Hijjah - Eid ul-Adha: Donate (another) Qurbani!
“Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, has bestowed plenty upon us, so eat some, give some in charity and store some. For these days (of Eid) are the days of eating, drinking and remembering Allah…” Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) [Nasā’ī]
Eid Mubarak! If you’ve given your Qurbani, why not give another one on behalf of a loved one or perhaps someone who may have passed away? Help feed the hungry and invite the mercy and blessings of Allah (SWT) into your life.
You still have time to donate your Qurbani with Penny Appeal for only £29 and provide 57 nutritious meals to a family in need.
