The Gambia, like other West African countries, has had a long history of slavery, which began in the tenth century. Around three million slaves were taken from the Gambia during the 300 years of the transatlantic slave trade. Slavery was finally abolished in the Gambia in 1906 although modern forms of slavery still persist. The Gambia is one of the world’s poorest countries.

It's mission accomplished for charity fundraiser Chris Marshall, who has run 2,012 kilometres (1,250 miles) in 2012, helping to fund 12 clean water wells in 12 countries.
Thanks to Chris Marshall's Run2012 Challenge, another community is delighted to receive their own source of clean water. The latest well has been installed at Sunderpur Village in the Sarlahi District, Nepal. It is estimated that more than 70 people will benefit.

Mera Apna Ghar (My Own Home), the Penny Appeal-funded orphanage in Sohawa, Pakistan, is expanding! On opening in January of this year, it was home to just six children. Now, six months later, the Mera Apna Ghar family boasts 16 children aged 4 to 14.
