Thirst Relief in Afghanistan: A Real-Life Impact
Allah Dad, 65, leads a family of 12 in Baghlan, Afghanistan. For years, fetching water was a daily battle - the nearest water source was far, and the journey drained his family's energy. The children struggled to balance school and chores, while clean water remained out of reach.
Thanks to the Thirst Relief project, funded by Penny Appeal, a solar-powered water entre was installed in their village. Now clean water is just steps away for drinking, washing, and daily rituals.
"This water centre is a blessing for my family. We don't worry about water anymore", Allah Dad shares. "It's about more than water as it has also helped us save time and energy, improving our whole life."

How It Works
Water
In desert areas of Pakistan, Afghanistan and beyond, water lies hundreds of metres underground - far beyond the reach of traditional pumps or buckets. Our solar-powered system harnesses sunlight to lift this water into a reservoir, where it’s safely stored. Clean water is then piped directly to homes, with fair allocations based on household size. Farmers can also access the water for their crops and animals, supporting livelihoods.

The solar panels don’t just pump water; they generate electricity for schools, mosques, and community centres. This power lights classrooms, charges torches, and keeps radios on which are essential tools for learning, safety, and communication. What exactly is a Solar Panel Water & Power Centre?
A Solar Panel Water & Power Centre is a specially designed facility that uses the sun’s energy to pump clean water from deep underground and store it in safe reservoirs. It then distributes this water to homes, schools, and farms. The same solar panels also generate sustainable electricity for community buildings like mosques, schools, and health centres. It’s a Sadaqah Jariyah project- a continuous charity-that will benefit entire communities for years to come, Insha’Allah.
How many people can one centre help?

Where are these centres built?
They are installed in water-scarce regions such as rural Afghanistan, Pakistan, and other vulnerable areas where communities struggle daily to find safe water and reliable electricity. Supporting them is a way of fulfilling Ḥuqūq al-‘Ibād (the rights of people), a beautiful act that Allah (ىَالَعَتَوُهَانَحْبُس) loves.
How does my donation make a difference?

The Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: “Whoever alleviates the hardship of a believer in this world, Allah will alleviate his hardship on the Day of Judgment.” (Muslim) Every drop of water and every light switched on becomes part of your ongoing reward.

We always honour your donation preferences. If a specific location or project can’t be delivered, your donation will be used for similar urgent needs in another community.
