When the explosion in Beirut’s port sent shock waves of destruction throughout the city on August 4th 2020, half the city was seriously damaged, over 200 people were killed, more than 6,000 were injured and 300,000 people found themselves out on the streets, homeless. Penny Appeal was there from the start with the help of our partners in Lebanon, providing emergency aid to individuals, hospitals and communities as a whole.

You’ve probably heard people say things like 'These people are so lazy. Why don’t they just get a job?' maybe you’ve even thought them yourself. When we see poverty around us, it’s hard to understand it and it’s even harder to accept it. But the reality is that poverty is not a choice; it’s a situation.
A Mosque means many things to many people. For some, it’s a community centre to meet friends and local loved ones. For others, it’s a sanctuary to escape the hustle and bustle of life. While many children attend ‘Madrassah classes’ every evening to learn about and connect with their faith.
Our dedicated team of Helpline Practitioners have been working hard behind-the-scenes, giving people a listening ear, a safe space to speak and even saving lives by helping give people safe routes out of abuse. We have been there for people for years, and we are still here.
It only took a few minutes for the explosion in Beirut on the 4th August 2020 to destroy large portions of the city and cause mass devastation, but the people of Lebanon have been experiencing hardship and neglect for years before this tragedy occurred.
