World Day for International Justice: What It Means for Palestine
The World Day for International Justice is more than just a date on the calendar. It is a day when the world comes together to reflect on the promise of fairness, dignity, and accountability for people who have been silenced, wronged, displaced or killed without reason. It’s a poignant call that helps us realise that behind every war, every injustice meted out in pursuit of land, power or control, there are mothers, children, and families just like ours; and whose lives have been devastated for no fault of theirs.
The World Day of International Justice is a mirror that reflects the decisions we make, the causes we support and the voices we amplify. It helps us to ask our own conscience and moral values questions like:
-What are we doing for the innocents?
-Are we speaking when it’s easier to be silent?
- Are we giving when we could have turned away?
In a world torn apart by conflict and cruelty, this day whispers what many shout in desperation:
Let there be justice. Let there be peace. Let there be humanity.
Justice shouldn’t be a privilege:
Imagine waking up in your own bed, the soft whirr of the fan above, the smell of tea brewing and planning the weekend Netflix chill time. Now imagine your moment of bliss interrupted by the sound of an airstrike-the shattering of your windows, your family screaming, being buried under the rubble of your own house-an entire reality altering within a matter of just a few seconds.
That’s the daily reality in Gaza.
We worry about rising bills.
They worry about buried bodies.
We complain about school runs.
They carry their children’s shrouds.
We choose between takeaway or cooking.
They choose between food or medicine-if either are available.
We stress over deadlines. They run from drones.
We dim the lights for ambience. They sit in darkness, without power.
We schedule doctor’s appointments. They bury loved ones, not one or two, but an entire family in a day.
We tuck our children into bed and pray they sleep well.
A mother in Gaza rocks her baby to sleep and prays they wake up alive.
We complain about the weather.
They pray for clean water and a roof that won’t collapse.
We’re choosing between oat milk or semi-skimmed.
They’re choosing between buying bread or buying medicine.
They are not just numbers on a screen or headlines we scroll past. They are mothers, fathers, children with dreams and fears just like ours-the only difference being ‘peace’ which should never be a privilege but a necessity for each one of us.
Beyond the headlines, Palestine is bleeding.
Over 50,000 Palestinians have been killed, many of them children. The ones surviving are either orphaned, left amputated or severely malnourished. Hospitals are bombed; schools have been blown to rubble. Clean water, food, electricity, medicine all are luxuries to them while we waste these blessings unreasonably.
What's happening in Palestine is not just a conflict. It is a humanitarian emergency-an important test of our humanity that has somehow diminished in our pursuits of unending materialistic pleasures.
And this World Day for International Justice, we just cannot afford to be silent.
What Does Justice for Palestine Look Like?
Justice looks like:
A child having access to clean water
A mother receiving urgent medical aid
A displaced family finding safe shelter
A grieving father knowing someone, somewhere, cares enough to help.
A nation filled with peace, prosperity and fairness.
Justice looks like you and us- Justice looks like people of unshaken morals with love for humanity in their veins, standing up, speaking out, and doing whatever we can to the best of our abilities.
Remember, the Prophet (ﷺ) has said:
“Whoever relieves the hardship of a believer in this world, Allah will relieve his hardship on the Day of Judgement.” (Sahih Muslim)
