Sri Lanka Flood Emergency

Help Rebuild Lives After Sri Lanka Floods.

Relentless rain and floods, triggered by Cyclone Ditwah, have devastated communities across Sri Lanka. Entire villages have been submerged, hillsides have collapsed under landslides, and thousands of families have seen their homes destroyed in the span of hours. As of early December 2025, more than 1.4 million people from over 400,000 families have been severely affected.

The human toll is heartbreaking. Hundreds have died, and hundreds more remain missing. Many are now sheltering in overcrowded relief centres, with no safe home to return to, no clean water, and no assurance of food. More than 565 homes have been lost entirely, and tens of thousands more damaged, leaving families exposed to cold, sickness, and despair.

Right now, mothers cradle their little ones under flimsy tarpaulins, children shiver through damp nights, and elders wait in uncertainty, longing for warmth and safety. Farmland and roads have been washed away, supply‑chains are broken, and for many, the fight is not just for shelter, but for survival itself.

A family meet receive supplies from Penny Appeal workers outside of a home affected by flooding.

Our Penny Appeal partners are responding as quickly as possible.

We are delivering emergency aid: warm meals and clean water to those who have lost everything, dry clothes and blankets to families shivering in temporary shelters, hygiene kits to help prevent disease, and whatever shelter we can manage so they have a safe place to sleep tonight.

We do this because in moments like this, every small act of kindness becomes a lifeline. Just one donation can provide a hot meal, a safe night’s sleep, or a drop of clean water, things many of us take for granted. Your gift today, whatever its size, can bring dignity, protection, and hope to a family who has lost all they knew.

With your help, we can bring relief. We can restore hope. We can remind families that they are not forgotten - that the world still cares.

Please donate now and stand with Sri Lanka in its hour of need.

  • This is the impact of your generosity. Together, we have provided food, water and vital support to those who need it most. Every donation, whether Sadaqah or Zakat, helps alleviate suffering and restore hope to communities facing unimaginable hardship.

How does my donation help people in Sri Lanka right now?

Your donation provides urgent aid to families affected by the floods, including hot meals, clean drinking water, dry clothing, blankets, hygiene kits, and temporary shelter. It helps people who have lost their homes, livelihoods and basic necessities.

Why is even a small donation so impactful in this emergency?

Because thousands of families have been displaced and resources are critically limited. A small contribution can provide a meal, clean water, or a safe night’s sleep for someone who has nothing left. Every pound brings immediate relief.

How is Penny Appeal able to respond so quickly?

We work closely with trusted local partners across Sri Lanka, allowing us to reach affected communities fast, assess needs accurately, and deliver essential aid even in areas cut off by floods or landslides.

How severe is the situation after Cyclone Ditwah?

Over 1.4 million people have been affected, with homes destroyed, roads washed away and families displaced into overcrowded shelters. Many lack food, clean water and protection from illness. The situation remains extremely urgent.

Is my donation Zakat or Sadaqah eligible?

Yes. With a notable Muslim population in the areas affected by the cyclone — notably Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Mannar, Puttalam, Colombo and Kandy — donations to Penny Appeal’s Sri Lanka Floods Emergency Appeal are eligible for both Zakat and Sadaqah, helping you fulfil your charitable intentions while providing life-saving relief.
