Earth Day 2025
Celebrate Earth Day 2025 the Sunnah Way:
Giving Back to the Planet Through Faith
We all celebrated Mother’s Day just recently, showering our mums with love and attention - with customised gifts, thoughtfully prepared treats and of course, capturing those moments for social media with the ever-popular hashtag #blessed.
It’s truly a blessing to have our parents with us. They are perhaps the only ones who nurtured and raised us with selfless devotion- all the while putting our needs above their own comfort, health and wishes.
But are they really the only ones?
Well, yes- when it comes to human relationships, there might not be anyone as selfless, merciful and compassionate as our parents.
But if we widen the lens a little and think of something that has been called ‘home’ for all of us — something that has nurtured not just us, but countless generations of human beings, animals, forests, and oceans — we’re reminded of Mother Earth.
Today, as we celebrate Earth Day, we’re reminded that this shared home of ours — cherished by both our ancestors and our children to come — doesn’t need grand gestures to feel loved. Just simple acts of kindness: protecting it from pollution, climate change, deforestation, and wasteful living.
Each year, the day is celebrated with a new theme. Today, Earth Day 2025 is being celebrated by the theme ‘OUR POWER, OUR PLANET’, aimed at uniting everybody around clean, renewable energy with a goal of tripling clean electricity by 2030.
As Muslims though, caring for the Earth is not just a passing trend: it’s a trust, an ‘amanah’ from Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى.
As Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) advised us, “The Earth is green and beautiful, and Allah SWT has appointed you as His stewards over it.” (Sahih Muslim)
Truly, as inhabitants of this beautiful planet, we must strive to care for it and not exploit its resources for materialistic profits.
Allah SWT in His Infinite Wisdom has mentioned the same in the Holy Qur’an:
“And do not commit abuse on the earth, spreading corruption.”
— Surah Al-Baqarah 2:60
We have been advised by our beloved Prophet (ﷺ) to ensure not even a droplet of water is wasted. He said, “Do not waste water, even if you perform your ablution on the banks of an abundantly flowing river.” (Ibn Majah)
Subhan Allah, it’s clear that sustainability is not just a modern value, it’s a deeply Islamic one.
At Penny Appeal, we take that responsibility seriously. We are passionately committed to ensuring that climate action and compassion go hand in hand. Through our Thirst Relief projects that provide clean and safe drinking water through tube wells and solar powered water wells, we not only ensure good access to this necessity but also work hard to minimise waste and long-term harm to the environment.
Also, with poverty being one of the major concerns of our world, we realised that feeding people in need isn’t all about tackling hunger — it is about building stronger, resilient and more self-sufficient communities that are better for the planet too. Our Feed Our World programme supports local farmers, reduces food waste, and makes sure no one is left behind.
Our upcoming Qurbani campaign ties in beautifully with Earth Day 2025 — because at its heart, Qurbani isn’t just about sacrifice; it’s about compassion, sustainability, and doing good in a way that honours both people and the planet. It’s a reminder to be mindful of how we give, what we consume, and how we care for the Earth in the process. From avoiding waste to supporting local communities and feeding those in need, Qurbani done right is a powerful way to give back — not just spiritually, but environmentally too.
Lastly, at Penny Appeal, we believe that small changes can make a big difference — and together, we can help create a planet that’s healthier, happier, and more hopeful for everyone.
