What is Zakat?
Zakat is the third pillar of Islam and is a compulsory charitable payment for all eligible adult Muslims that meet the nisab threshold.
What is Nisab?
The nisab is the minimum amount of total wealth that Muslims must own before Zakat becomes mandatory. The Prophet (ﷺ) set the nisab threshold to be equivalent to 87.48 grams of gold and 612.36 grams of silver.
What % of my wealth must I pay in Zakat?
Zakat in Islam is a payment of 2.5% of our total savings and wealth. Zakat donations are used to benefit the impoverished and disadvantaged. Paying your Zakat can help hundreds of people in need and gain you Sadaqah Jariyah for years to come.
In Arabic Zakat means to grow, to increase and to purify – the idea is that giving Zakat will not decrease your wealth, but instead it will increase it and purify it.
Indeed, the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ)said: “Charity never decreases wealth.” [ Muslim]

Administration of Zakat
As Allah (SWT) tells us in the holy Qur’an: “Alms-tax (Zakat) is only for the poor and the needy, for those employed to administer it, for those whose hearts are attracted to the faith, for freeing slaves, for those in debt, for Allah’s cause, and for needy travellers. This is an obligation from Allah. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.” (Qur’an 9:60)
Penny Appeal operates a 100% Zakat policy – so, 100% of your Zakat donation will be sent to the beneficiaries of our projects, without a single penny deducted by us for administration costs.
However, we often use implementing partners in the field – small, local organisations with good knowledge of communities in hard-to-reach areas. When administering Zakat on our behalf, these local organisations might accrue administering costs – for example, fuel for driving to remote villages to distribute aid. In such instances, they are Islamically justified, as “those employed to administer (Zakat)” (Qur’an 9:60) to utilise up to 12.5% of Zakat donations for such unavoidable overhead costs.
It is important to remember that, like the orphans, widows and displaced families that they serve on our behalf, these workers are also beneficiaries of your generosity – the work allows their small organisations to thrive, to receive further commissions, to support their families and to stimulate their local economies, ultimately benefitting their wider communities, Alhamdulillah.
What does ‘Where Most Needed’ mean?
We work with experts in the field as well as our established partners on the ground to locate countries, communities, and people that are most in need. So, when we say your donation is being delivered to where most needed, rest assured that you are helping support some of the most vulnerable communities in the world!
We always do our best to meet your requests!
