When Rain Brings Ruin: Pakistan Floods
Since mid-August 2024, Pakistan has been experiencing nature’s fury as heavy downpour has caused deadly floods across numerous southeastern regions of Sindh province, especially Mirpur Khas, Sujawal, Badin, Umer Kot, and Tharparkar.
Most of these places along with adjoining areas such as Hyderabad, Jacobabad, Karachi among others have been put on high alert due to the possibility ofurther heavy downpours which are expected to sweep through central Pakistan in the coming days. If that wasn’t enough, the country’s Punjab region is also at the brink of flooding caused by a combination of heavy rains and rising water levels of the river Indus and hill torrents from the Koh-e-Suleman range. Unfortunately, as per the Cyclonic Storm Alert issued by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the rainfall is expected to exceed 115mm in most parts of these areas and is likely to trigger rural and urban flooding, bringing thousands of lives to a grinding standstill.
s well as lives lost, homes, crops and entire livelihoods have been swept away in the destruction. A future of uncertainty looms over a population who are all too familiar with what’s to come.
According to initial reports from the worst affected areas of Mirpur Khas, a total of 3876 houses have so far beeevacuated, more than 5,500 hectares of crops have beedestroyed, 619 livestock have been lost, and 5deaths have been confirmed along with arounone hundred injuries – Subhan'Allah!
Our brothers and sisters are in dire need of life-saving support and suppliesuch as provision of clean drinking water, cooked meals, food parcels, medicine, mosquito nets and vaccinations for children and livestock.
