It's World Water Day!
Now that World Water Day is upon us, let us be reminded of the critical importance of water in our lives. Water is a means for survival, vital for all forms of life to flourish and thrive. It is imperative for us to recognise that water should never be something we take for granted; although a fundamental human right, access to clean water is a blessing from the Almighty.
This World Water Day, Penny Appeal invites you to join us in celebrating the gift of water and making a lasting impact on the lives of those in need.
Water holds significant importance in Islamic teachings, with numerous references in the Quran and Hadiths emphasising its essential role in sustaining life and symbolising purity, such as the following story told by the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ):
One day, while wandering in the desert, a woman came across a thirsty dog desperately seeking water. Feeling compassion for the animal and with limited resources around, she filled her shoe with water from a well and quenched the dog's thirst. Moved by her act of kindness towards the animal, Allah (SWT) forgave her sins and granted her entry into Paradise. (Bukhari).
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) then shared this story with his companions, emphasising the importance of mercy and compassion towards all living creatures, and how even a small act of kindness can lead to immense rewards from Allah (SWT).
This story serves as a reminder for Muslims to emulate the Prophet's (ﷺ) teachings of kindness, compassion, and forgiveness towards all beings, regardless of their social status or background. Particularly in terms of conserving water and quenching the thirst of others, the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) encouraged conservation and generosity, teaching us the value of this precious resource.
Unfortunately, millions around the world still lack access to clean and safe water, facing daily struggles to meet their basic needs. This Ramadan, as we reflect on our blessings and practice acts of charity and kindness, let us remember those who are less fortunate and in desperate need of clean water.
Penny Appeal is dedicated to providing sustainable water solutions to communities in need, from digging wells and installing water pumps to establishing water purification systems. With your support, we can continue our efforts to bring clean water to those who need it most.
This Ramadan, as you prepare to give generously and seek the blessings of this sacred month, consider donating to Penny Appeal's Thirst Relief projects. Your donation, no matter how small, can make a world of difference in someone's life, providing them with access to clean water and the opportunity for a better future.
Let us heed the words of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) who said, "The best charity is giving water to drink." (Ahmad). Together, let's make a positive impact this Ramadan by ensuring that everyone has access to this essential resource.
