Poverty is sexist

Around the world, twice as many girls than boys will never start school.

Globally, that’s 65 million girls who are not in school.

Many of these girls are orphans, without family or support to help them get to school.

Poverty is sexist; it tells girls that their education is not as important as boys’ education. It tells them that they don’t deserve to learn, to sit behind a desk and get a good education. It steals girls’ curiosity, and tells them that there is no childhood for them; only housework, hard labour or child marriage.

UNESCO found that for every year that a country's average years of schooling increases, its long-term economic growth increases by 3.7%.
