Echoes of Beirut: Rebuilding Lives and Creating Hope
Four years ago, on the 4th of August 2020, the world was stunned by videos and images of a massive explosion that bought innumerable lives in Beirut, Lebanon to a grievous standstill. The massive explosion of ammonium nitrates in Beirut’s port had launched the country already struggling with the malaise of poverty and recovering from the aftermath of Covid-19, into a harrowing crisis. It feels distressing to realize that nearly 50% of the Lebanese population was already struggling through a life below the poverty-line before the tragedy made its way to their lives. The massive blast killed more than 220 people, left 6500 injured and an estimate of 300,000 homeless but shattered innumerable lives.
At a time when the world watched the tragedy unfold in an inexplicable state of shock and helplessness, Penny Appeal launched its first Disaster Response Team on the 8th of August –and deployed the team on the Lebanese soil, just four days after the unfortunate event. When the members of our Disaster Response Team set foot on the shores of Beirut, the very atmosphere seemed to tremble with a ghostly residue of the explosion, as if the air itself bore witness to the devastation. It was as though the blast had torn the fabric of reality, leaving behind a palpable, haunting echo of its fury.
The team started their aid mission by providing 5 hospitals run by the Lebanese branch of the Palestinian Red Crescent Society with medical supplies, burn creams and painkillers, as well as other types of medical kits. Soon after, they began their food pack and hygiene kit deliveries to those in need and aided our partners with hot meal distributions. But there was another imminent and crucial concern of rebuilding homes-the creation of havens where hope can thrive amidst the storm-and Alhamdulillah, through the generosity of our invaluable donors supporting our Lebanon Emergency Appeal, we have helped rebuild not just structures but provided security and support for countless families in dire need.
We have tirelessly strived to meet the immediate needs of food, medical supplies and hygiene kits and sought to provide psychosocial support to the survivors with fully trained practitioners running outreach programs throughout the community, in a bid to help people who have seen the catastrophe unfold before their eyes and in the very next blink of those horrified eyes, they had seen their dwellings destroyed. Last year, our CEO Ridwana Wallace-Laher visited Lebanon to witness first-hand the stories of resilience, hope, and the extra-ordinary power of change that was possible through the relentless nature of our team and local partners on ground.
With cold winds beginning their relentless advance at the end of September and the specter of a major war looming over Lebanon, the people of Lebanon are bracing for the worst-case scenario. The shadow of a major war and dark memories of witnessing an unimaginable blast just four years ago, the people of Lebanon are in an even greater need of a sense of security and comfort.
We cannot wait; we must move swiftly to ensure that families have a sanctuary against the unforeseen conditions, a place of warmth and safety to shield them from the harsh months ahead. Please donate generously to our Emergency Response here.
This is more than a plea for assistance; it is a call to humanitarian arms for compassion and humanity. Together, we can help rebuild not just lives, but the spirit and resilience of a nation in need.
