Pakistan: A Cold Reality
Winter in Pakistan isn’t just about frosty temperatures, for many it’s a battle against the elements for survival. The Swat region in particular is witness to bone-chilling temperatures plummeting to as low as -14°C. Many across the region are forced to reside in dilapidated mud homes, ill-equipped to shield from the biting cold. Pakistan is one of the most vulnerable countries to the impacts of climate change, despite only contributing 0.9% to global greenhouse gas emissions. We saw the bleak reality of this through some of the worst flooding the world has ever seen in 2022. As the weather becomes even more unpredictable and extreme, it is likely that countries like Pakistan will experience colder, prolonged winters which will ultimately put thousands of lives at risk.
With 95 million people living in poverty (39.4% of the population), Pakistan grapples with a shocking reality. 20 million people are currently homeless in Pakistan, the highest number in the whole of Asia. Unforgiving winter conditions make this huge group of people especially vulnerable; not only do they lack shelter, they also don't have access to adequate clothing or hot meals to keep them warm.
As the nation still tries to recover from the devastating floods of 2022, conditions for many are still extremely dangerous. Winter has already begun for northern regions in Pakistan as rain, hail, and heavy snowfall caused widespread disruption in October. Winter in Pakistan is a season of struggle for millions who live in poverty, with many challenges to navigate.
This year, the support needed to help our brothers and sisters in Pakistan is more critical than ever. Penny Appeal have been providing life-saving winter support to Pakistan since our conception in 2009. We are dedicated to supporting communities who suffer from the bitter winter conditions with little resources.
For many, winter is a season of struggle and adversity with severe weather conditions posing a real threat to life.
