Kashmir: Winter Stories from the Ground
Your Winter Charity is Changing Lives
This winter, we visited our brothers and sisters living in District Neelum, Azad Kashmir, to provide disadvantaged members of our ummah with warm clothing, thick blankets and assistance with vital shelter repairs that will help protect them all season long. Earlier this year, before winter swept in and froze the land, Neelum suffered a devastating avalanche which killed 77 people, damaged hundreds of homes and affected over 4,000 Kashmiri families. With you help, we’ve been able to offer some of the families affected by this natural disaster with support and supplies, alhamdulillah.
Every donation made towards our Kashmir Winter Emergency has served the community in Neelum and been used to protect innocent lives from the brutal winter. Have a look at some of the many people you’ve helped this season in Azad Kashmir so far, and please continue to help us protect those in need this winter.
You protected Afia from the cold
At the young age of 6, Afia is an orphan. In 2019, she lost both of her parents when an avalanche of snow hit her village in Neelum. She now lives with her uncle, and he does his best to care for the young girl. She misses her parents every day but as snow covers the ground around her, she is reminded of avalanche that took her parents from her. The cold shakes her to her very core.
Your donations provided Afia and her uncle with warm clothing and blankets that have helped them live a more comfortable life this winter. Without your support, Afia would have had no way to keep warm.
You’ve helped Raisham’s family survive the winter
Raisham is a mother of 5, living in Azad Kashmir. She is an excellent cook, but often there is not enough food to go around for her whole family. Her husband is a daily wager, doing his best to support the household but unfortunately, he hardly makes enough to manage life’s daily expenses.
It’s hard for Raisham to provider her children with the essentials they need for a happy childhood and without help, they would not have made it through the winter. Your donations provided her family with winter kits that were truly life-saving.
You donated and kept Noman and Musarat warm
Noman and Musarat are two young children living in Neelum with mother. Unfortunately, their father died in an accident and the children are now orphans. Their mother works hard to take care of their family but without her husband, life is difficult. Sometimes they receive support from their neighbours in the village or from charity organizations when they come to town, and these gestures of kindness never fail to bring joy to Noman and Musarat’s family.
By donating to our Kashmir Winter Emergency, people like you have helped Noman and Musarat stay warm this season. The clothing and blankets they received will protect them from the cold and allow their mother to focus on purchasing food and other essentials, instead of fretting over her children freezing.
You gave Mr. Mir Baz hope this season
Mr. Mir Baz is 63-years-old. He worked hard his whole life to build his home and make it a warm, welcoming place for his family, but everything he worked for was destroyed when an avalanche hit his village in Neelum in 2019. His home was destroyed and his belonging were lost.
Mr. Mir Baz is now living with his daughters, but he is struggling to make ends meet. With household, food and health care expenses piling up, Mr. Mir Baz needed a hand up to make it through this winter. Kashmir Winter Emergency donations gave him the help him and his family needed to survive.
You provided protection for Momna Bibi and her brothers
Momna Bibi is a young girl living with her two brothers and grandfather in District Neelum, Azad Kashmir. Momna Bibi, Umair and their other brother all became orphans when their father died of heart attack while working in Karachi on daily wages. They live with their grandfather now and while he takes good care of them, money is tight.
When the snow began to fall and the temperatures in Kashmir dropped, Momna and her brothers were very cold. They didn’t have enough proper seasonal clothing to protect them from the bitter winter, but that changed when Penny Appeal visited their home. They received winter emergency support and all got new, warm clothing and blankets.
This winter simple donations made here in the UK had a big impact on families living in Azad Kashmir. Children like Afia, Momna, Noman and Umair were kept safe and sound from the dangers of winter weather, and people like Mr. Mir Baz and Raisham were able to reset easy knowing that Penny Appeal were there to support them this season. As winter carries on, please continue to help us protect families like these in Azad Kashmir by donating to our Kashmir Winter Emergency appeal.
