Feeding while Fasting – Penny Appeal serving the vulnerable in London
The Mayor of Hammersmith & Fulham joined Penny Appeal in London’s Shepherd’s Bush to see our Community Kitchen Food Truck in action.
Penny Appeal teamed up with local organisation Urban Partnership Group to provide essentials to local vulnerable people at the Edward Woods Community Centre, based in West London.
Staff and volunteers shared pre-packed nutritious hot meals, food parcels and care packages to low-income families and the elderly.
Charlene Edwards, Director of UK Programmes at Penny Appeal, said: “The month of Ramadan is a time to reflect and to remind ourselves of those who are less fortunate than us. Our donors have been incredibly charitable, enabling us to do more to help those in need, regardless of background, all year round. With elderly people and families on low income facing a huge rise in energy bills, we know many won’t be able to afford to heat up their homes, having to choose between keeping warm or having something to eat. We’re doing what we can to help.
She added: “Our new Community Kitchen Food Truck will be travelling around the UK, partnering up with local organisations helping low-income households. We’re providing thousands of food parcels and other much-needed essentials. While it’s sad that this work is necessary in the first place, the response here in Hammersmith & Fulham today has been incredible. It is has been wonderful to see the impact the Community Kitchen is having so far, and we look forward to delivering many more meals and care packages around the country.”
Jacquie Boyce, Community Centre Manager said, “Penny Appeal have helped deliver a range of essential foods and much-needed hygiene products right to our doorsteps. Despite being one of London’s richest boroughs, Hammersmith and Fulham is witnessing a sharp increase in food and fuel poverty. The Community Kitchen Food Truck has made an indelible impact with our service users at Edward Woods Community Centre. Our sincere thanks to Penny Appeal and all their supporters; because of you, many families will have their kitchens stocked and enjoy a delicious hot meal today.”
