The Day of Ashura - When Miracles were Manifested
Today is the blessed Day of Ashura, which is the 10th day of Muharram, the first month in the Islamic calendar. It is a day that gives us all the opportunity to deepen our faith and devotion, and a day to remember and honour the various miracles that were manifested for most of the Prophets chosen by Allah (SWT). The Day of Ashura is responsible for many of the religious and spiritual lessons we know and observe.
Here are some of the miracles that took place on this day:
When the children of Israel were undergoing a torturous regime of the tyrant Pharaoh, it was on this blessed day that Allah (SWT) helped Prophet Musa (AS) and his followers escape the tyranny by parting the Red Sea, leaving Pharaoh and his army to perish in the process.
The day marks the end of the catastrophic deluge and the beginning of a new era for humankind as the Ark of Prophet Nuh (AS) came to rest on Mount Judi after the Great Flood receded by the beneficence of Allah (SWT).
The Day of Ashura saw another miracle when Prophet Yunus (AS) was freed after being swallowed by a great fish sent by Allah (SWT). Engulfed by darkness, despair was the scariest feeling of all. Eventually, his prayers were heard and as his doubt disappeared, it was clear that Almighty Allah (SWT) was in control, not he. This timeless story reminds us that even when things appear to be too much for us to handle, anything is possible if only we have faith in Allah (SWT).
It was also on this day that Allah (SWT) restored the health of Prophet Ayub (AS) after a prolonged period of suffering physical illness, financial bankruptcy, and the loss of children. He suffered almost every misfortune that we would pray to be protected from. With the mercy of Allah (SWT), his wealth and family were restored, owing to his unwavering faith, impeccable patience, and hope in the Glory of Allah (SWT).
Fasting on the Day of Ashu
The Day of Ashura is a day that calls for sincere gratitude and remembrance. On this sacred day let us be reminded of all the miracles performed and recreate the gratitude displayed by Prophet Musa (AS) who fasted on this day.
The Prophet (ﷺ) was asked about fasting the Day of Ashura and he (ﷺ) said: ‘’It will expiate the sins of the past year.’’ [Muslim]. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Fast the Day of `Ashura’ and be different from the People of the Book by fasting a day before it (9th Muharram) or a day after it (11th Muharram).” [Ahmad]
The rewards of fasting on the 10th of Muharram are immense, along with fasting either the 9th or 11th also, as prescribed by our beloved Prophet (ﷺ). It is an opportunity to remember our brothers and sisters around the world who are deprived of food and water – Subhan'Allah. This day is also an opportunity for us to be generous and help our Ummah.
The Significance of Water on the Day of Ashur
The Day of Ashura also places great significance on the importance of water which itself holds a poignant place in its commemoration. When we think of Muharram, may we be reminded of the supreme sacrifice offered by the beloved grandson of the Prophet (ﷺ), Imam Hussain (R.A), when he confronted the tyrannical regime of his time despite facing blistering heat and being blocked from any source of water for days on end. His courage acts showed true devotion to our faith before being mercilessly martyred on the plains of Karbala alongside his family and companions.
To honour the spirit and sacrifice of Imam Hussain (R.A), giving the previous gift of water to the less fortunate and those travelling is considered one of the best ways to gain the satisfaction of Allah (SWT). This act is not only a tribute to the martyrs of Karbala but also a manifestation of the values of compassion and charity in Islam, as the Prophet (ﷺ) rightly said: “The best charity is giving water to drink.’’ [Ahmad]. To reap maximum rewards from this beautiful charity, it is said that giving the gift of water on the Day of Ashura is like giving water every day for a year.
At Penny Appeal, we strive to embody the spirit of Ashura not just throughout the blessed month of Muharram, but throughout the entire year, working to bring relief and joy to those struggling by giving the precious gift of water.
