Combatting Loneliness in the Community and Beyond
As Loneliness Awareness Week comes to an end, we want to take a closer look at the silent epidemic which affects millions of people around the world. Here at Penny Appeal, we’re no stranger to the odd feeling of loneliness and are aware of the profound impact it can have in our community and beyond. We have initiatives to help battle loneliness along with a couple of top tips to help you if you come across the feeling.
Loneliness has a profound impact upon the elderly in particular; whether it be friends or partners who have passed away or family who no longer live locally, there is no escaping spending a lot of time in your own company as you get older. We have witnessed first-hand the impact this has on our elders in the developing world and how the struggle could be even worse when also battling food insecurity, contaminated water, and life post natural disaster. That’s why we started our ‘Adopt a Gran’ appeal.
It is estimated that there will be over 3 billion over 60s by 2050, who all deserve to live a happy, healthy life. Alone, this isn’t always possible. In the developing world, the elderly are extremely vulnerable to illnesses as they often cannot access the essential foods and medicines they need to remain healthy. When you sponsor an elderly person, you’re giving them the opportunity to live out the rest of their life with everything they need including social opportunities to help them combat loneliness.
We’re aware that loneliness doesn’t just affect those overseas, it is in our community every day. That’s why we have initiatives to help alleviate loneliness here in the UK. Our incredible #TeamOrange volunteers distribute hot meals, drinks, and much needed company to struggling individuals in Bradford and beyond every Thursday at our community kitchen. It is a great opportunity for those in the community to socialise, form new connections and have a much-needed hot meal. Everyone is welcome at our community kitchen and we’re happy it’s been such a resounding success.
Our top tips to combat loneliness:
- Reach out: Initiate conversations, make plans and try to engage in activities involving others. Even a simple phone call, walk with a friend or a coffee with a family member can brighten your day.
- Join a social club: There are countless local groups and clubs which can provide much needed interaction with others. Why not take up a new hobby? Whether it’s arts and crafts, a book club or a sport, have a look within your community and online. Here at Penny Appeal, we always have fundraising challenges for you to get involved with. Sign up to our Mount Snowden trek, or how about running the London 10k? Our challenges are a great opportunity to meet new people while giving back to the community.
- Volunteer your time: Giving back to your community can not only create a sense of purpose and belonging, but it can also be a rewarding experience. Why not join #TeamOrange and volunteer in our local projects?
- Embrace technology: Connecting with others has never been easier. Virtual platforms and social networks can provide avenues for interaction wherever you are in the world.
- Take care: Practicing self-care is crucial. Always make time to engage in activities which bring you joy and allow you to maintain a positive mindset and seek professional support if needed.
Loneliness is a profound and pervasive issue which we must not ignore. We take it very seriously and will continue to support those in our community through our weekly kitchen and worldwide through our Adopt a Gran campaign. The fight against loneliness requires our collective effort. Why not reach out to a friend, ex-colleague, or a grandparent today? Together we can make a difference and alleviate some of the loneliness we encounter, one act of kindness at a time.
