Celebrating Mothers this Ramadan
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:
“Do you have a mother?... Then stay with her, for Paradise is beneath her feet.”
(an-Nasa'i)
As the blessings of Ramadan are almost upon us, and today also happens to be Mother’s Day, we’ve decided to explore the beautiful connection between mothers, Ramadan, and the part they play in our faith overall.
In Islam, mothers are held in the highest regard. The Qur’an and Sunnah emphasise treating mothers with the upmost respect and kindness, recognising the influence they have in shaping us and holding our families together. When our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) was once asked who was most deserving of fine treatment, the Prophet (ﷺ) replied, “Your mother, then your mother, then your mother, then your father, then your nearest, then nearest.” [Bukhari & Muslim]
Ramadan, as we know, is a time for deepening our spirituality and strengthening our connection to Allah (SWT). It also allows us to practise self-discipline, empathy, and gratitude. During the blessed month, we will come together with our families for suhoor and iftar, sharing not only delicious food but also prayers, laughter, and love, which mothers are often at the centre of.
Mothers lead by example, demonstrating the essence of Ramadan through their own actions. Whether it's through their steadfast commitment to prayer, acts of charity, or acts of kindness towards others, they inspire their families to embody the teachings of Islam in their daily lives. Their unwavering faith and devotion serve as a guiding light, illuminating the path towards spiritual enlightenment for their children and loved ones.
Here at Penny Appeal, we’re passionate about empowering those facing adversity across the globe. Our OrphanKind programme supports those who have lost their mothers, fathers, or both parents and are in need of guidance, care, and love. In cases where the breadwinning parent passes away, children and their remaining family members are often left in difficult financial situations, sometimes forced to work at young ages to earn money for basic necessities. Education and social activities are halted as young children have no choice but to help make ends meet. In instances where this happens, Penny Appeal are dedicated to not just helping children, but also supporting the mothers left behind when their husbands pass away.
Mehedi was just a child when his father, the breadwinner of the family, passed away, leaving behind a substantial amount of debt. His mother was struggling to make ends meet, meaning Mehedi and his sister were forced out of education and into child labour. Penny Appeal supported Mehedi’s family, giving his mother all the tools she needed to start a livestock business and become self-sufficient. Now, Mehedi and his sister are free from the burden of supporting their family, and are back in education, ready to break the cycle of poverty they once found themselves in, Alhamdulillah.
Mehedi’s story is just one example of how we’re supporting mothers and families using your incredible donations. You can help a child with no one to provide for them or a struggling family this Ramadan by clicking here and sponsoring an orphan today.
So, with the holy month almost upon us, how will you empower your mother this Ramadan?
From everyone here at Penny Appeal, we’d like to wish mothers everywhere a very happy Mother’s Day!
