The blessed month of Muharram is upon us! Today marks the first day of the Islamic New Year, however seeing in the New Year is not always a happy occasion for everyone.

It is therefore a crucial time for reflection and contemplation, and a time to remember the deprived and destitute.  It’s a time to focus on our faith and strengthen our relationship with Allah (SWT).

The Islamic calendar is filled with many days and nights that are special and carry great reward. Muharram is an especially holy month. In this month, we must make every effort to do righteous deeds and draw closer to Allah (SWT).

The value and significance of Muharram is so immense that it is also known as the Month of Allah (SWT). During this month, our deeds carry more weight, and so the rewards we receive are multiplied!

In providing life-saving water wells around the world, we commemorate the huge sacrifice made by the family of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), namely the noble Imam Hussain (RA) and his heroic companions (RA).

Central to the events of Karbala was the deprivation of water from women, children and the vulnerable. Whilst many years have passed since these atrocities, there are many Karbalas around the world today. Access to clean water is essential for human survival, and yet 2.2 billion people around the world still don’t have access to safe drinking water.

To date, Penny Appeal has installed over 40,000 water systems and wells in countries such as Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Somalia, Kashmir, and Uganda – each well providing a vital source of water that will benefit communities for years to come.
