Here’s a few facts and secrets that you might not know about Peru
A royal holiday destination?
Some archaeologists believe that Machu Picchu was designed as a resort town for the royal family to escape the busy city of Cuzco!
The lost city of Machu Picchu was built to withstand earthquakes
Machu Picchu was built along a major fault line that runs across Peru, making the area prone to earthquakes. The buildings were constructed without using mortar to keep the stones in place. An ancient engineering technique called ‘ashlar masonry’ was used to cut rocks to sit together perfectly without the need for mortar.
During an earthquake, the stones ‘dance’ in place, settling back into their original spot after the tremors stop! Yep, Machu Picchu is impressive!
The Temple of the Moon
There’s a secret temple that many people never see, called the Temple of the Moon. National Geographic said it’s located on the far side of the mountain peak, Huayna Picchu.
Machu Picchu was only discovered 107 years ago
One hundred and seven years ago today, while searching for a lost Incan capital, Hiram Bingham, a Hawaiian-born American explorer, discovered Machu Picchu.
Llamas will photo bomb your holiday pics!
Llamas and alpacas will be found grazing the grounds at Machu Picchu, they were important resources for the Incas not having other domesticated animals such as horses, goats or sheep. Llamas were traditionally valued for their wool and nutrient- rich poop to fertilize crops.
What does Machu Picchu mean?
The name Machu Picchu translates to ‘old peak’ or ‘old mountain’ and the complex consists of over 100 flights of stairs carved from stone.
