Famine in East Africa
UN: World facing greatest humanitarian crisis since World War 2.
Intense sunlight is evaporating all of the remaining water in East Africa. The severe drought is killing the livestock thousands of people rely on to eat and has turned farmland across the area into barren desert.
To avert a humanitarian catastrophe, we need your donations to save some of the 20 million lives at immediate risk of death as a result of the famine. This figure includes over 7 million lives suffering in Yemen alone.
"The lives of millions of people depend on our collective ability to act. We have heard the alerts. Now there is no time to lose."
We are continuing to reach millions of people with lifesaving aid; food, water and sanitation and medical supplies as well as blankets and mattresses for internally displaced people, but these countries need more aid, urgently.
In the last few days, Reuters have reported that families with multiple children are forced to make an agonizing choice – which child to feed.
Families from rural areas are leaving their homes and communities in search of cities, knowing that they may not make it alive. This is their only chance of survival.
Stephen O'Brien told the UN Security Council “without collective and coordinated global efforts, people will simply starve to death” and “many more will suffer and die from disease.”
Donating is simple. A small amount of your time can save entire lives of desperately vulnerable people and make a big difference to saving humanity from a global catastrophe.
