Penny Appeal’s Back to School fund is here to help families experiencing financial hardship as a result of COVID-19. Sending the kids back to school doesn’t need to be a struggle, we’re here to help.
If you’re on a low income and are looking for a little extra support when it comes to sending your children back to school, apply for our Back to School grant.
Back to School Fund
Penny Appeal’s Back to School fund has been set up to help make going back to school easier for families who have been struggling financially due to the coronavirus. Our Back to School grant offers support to lower-income families by helping to cover the cost of school uniforms, as well as providing children with free school meals.
Kids are already getting prepared to head back to school, so we’re here to help you be prepared to send them off.
Who can apply?
Parents or guardians of children in Year 3 to Year 11 can apply to our Back to School grant for free school meals, and caregivers of children from Reception to Year 11 can apply for a uniform grant.
You may apply for a Back to School grant if:
- You are a permanent resident of Bradford City Council
- You are NOT receiving any one of the following support payments:
• Income Support
• Child Tax Credit (with an annual income of less than £16,190 and not receiving Working Tax Credit)
• Working Tax Credit (note: maximum income levels may apply)
• Income based Job Seeker's Allowance
• Guarantee element of State Pension Credit
• Income related Employment and Support Allowance
• Universal Credit with an annual net earned income threshold of less than £7,400
- You are a single parent on furlough and not entitled to any of the above benefits
- You are a BAME parent on furlough and not entitled to any of the above benefits
- You are in receipt of Universal Credit but are not receiving it
- You are a part of a household in receipt of JSA (contribution based element only)
- You live in a household not in receipt of qualifying benefits and are earning less than £30k with a parent on furlough, on reduced hours or made redundant through COVID-19.
Applications WILL NOT be considered for any household earning more than £30,000 a year.

Our Back to School grant is a small fund so, we highly recommend getting your applications in as soon as possible.

Our Back to School grant is a small fund, which means grants are unlikely to be available after January 2021. So, we highly recommend getting your applications in as soon as possible.
You can apply for a Back to School grant by downloading an application form and emailing it to [email protected] once you’ve filled in all the relevant fields.
What is the value of the Back to School grant?
Our Back to School grant provides children with free school meals and helps to cover the cost of school uniforms. The grant for free school meals will be paid for one whole term, for one child per family up to £150. Grants for school meals are paid directly to your child’s school, so you can be assured that they will receive meals for the entire term.
Our Back to School grant for school uniforms is up to £100 per family. These grants will be given via a Bradford uniform shop. Where this is not possible, a small number of grants can be paid directly to your family.
