Inspiring Ambition and Overcoming Barriers - Eid Celebrations at the University of Sunderland
Penny Appeal enjoyed a belated Eid celebration with students at the University of Sunderland over the weekend, while inspiring students to develop ambitious dreams and goals for the future.
The interfaith event – held by the university’s Islamic Society and Malaysian Society – was a successful afternoon that brought together different communities from all walks of life. Penny Appeal's attendance at the event celebrated the vital role of collaboration and dialogue to bridge divides, foster greater understanding, and encourage more inclusive spaces.
Our CEO Ridwana Wallace-Laher spoke about her own personal journey, as a rising star who ascended the orange ranks to become the first woman to run a major British Muslim charity. The audience was inspired by her story and encouraged by her ambition. Our founder Adeem Younis also shared a moving speech about his own journey in setting up Penny Appeal and the barriers he overcame in order to do so, becoming an orphan at the age of six and battling abject poverty Attendees were also delighted to receive copies of the compelling Penny Appeal story, Small Change, Big Difference!
Comedian Abdullah Afzal of BBC fame was also present to enlighten the audience with a hilarious 30 minute stand-up set, demonstrating his unique take on the British Muslim experience.
Attended by both the Muslim and Christian chaplains of the university, the event highlighted the importance of mutual respect, understanding and cooperation between different communities.
Penny Appeal is committed to creating a brighter future for everyone, and we are proud to have been part of this exceptional event. Thank you to the University of Sunderland for organising such an inspiring afternoon.
