The Best Day of the Year: The Day of 'Arafah
There are a handful of important days throughout the Islamic year, but there is only one which is considered the best of them all, the day of ‘Arafah. Today marks a profound spiritual experience for pilgrims performing Hajj in Makkah, but also for every Muslim across the world.
It is believed that on this day, our beloved Allah (SWT) perfected Islam and gave it to humankind through his Messenger. Although the final verses of the Quran were not revealed at this point, Allah (SWT) sent this:
“Today I have perfected for you your religion and completed upon you My blessing and I have chosen for you Islam as your religion” [Quran 5:3]
Central to the day of ‘Arafah is the concept of forgiveness. As we engage in acts of worship and reflection, we must also seek forgiveness from Allah (SWT) and extend forgiveness to others. Today is a unique opportunity to acknowledge our mistakes, shortcomings and sins; a powerful connection between ourselves, others and Him.
Here’s what we’re doing on this blessed day of ‘Arafah:
Fasting
Even though we are not on Hajj, it is still important to observe the significance of this day. Fasting is one way to embrace the symbolism of the day of ‘Arafah and feel the spiritual connection. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: “[fasting] expiates the sins of the past year and the coming year.” [Muslim] This day is an opportunity for a clean slate.
Make Dua
Strengthening our bond with Allah (SWT) is a vital aspect of this day; making Dua numerous times throughout the day is effective as after all he is our ultimate source of guidance. We should be present in this day with a clear heart and an open mind in order to experience a profound closeness to Him. We can seek blessings, spiritual growth and establish a direct line of communication between ourselves and our Creator.
Give
Acts of charity on this day allow us to access multiplied rewards. A charitable act to help someone in need, especially an orphan, a widow or the poor is a great way to receive ongoing blessings for ourselves and our families. Even the smallest acts of kindness are rewarded abundantly by Allah (SWT), whether it’s donating a last-minute Qurbani, sponsoring an orphan or even spreading kind gestures in your community. This day is the best day to invest in your Sadaqah Jariyah; why not take a look at some of the projects we’re currently running?

The significance of this blessed day extends beyond the physical boundaries of Hajj, it is a global observance.
