Day of Arafat: A Sacred Day of Mercy, Forgiveness, and Generosity
As the blessed month of Dhul-Hijjah reaches its peak, Muslims around the world turn their hearts and minds to one of the holiest days in the Islamic calendar: the Day of Arafat.
Falling on the 9th day of Dhul-Hijjah, the Day of Arafat holds immense spiritual significance. For those performing Hajj, it is the pinnacle of their pilgrimage. For others, it is a sacred opportunity for forgiveness, prayer, and giving.
What Is the Day of Arafat?
The Day of Arafat commemorates the moment when Prophet (ﷺ) delivered his final sermon on Mount Arafat. It is the day when millions of pilgrims gather on the plains of Arafat, standing in supplication and seeking the mercy of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى.
Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:
“There is no day on which Allah frees more people from the Fire than the Day of Arafat.” - [Sahih Muslim]
It is a day when the gates of heaven are open, sins are forgiven, and prayers are answered. Even for those not performing Hajj, it is highly recommended to fast on this day.
The Virtue of Fasting on Arafat
The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“Fasting on the Day of Arafat expiates the sins of the previous year and the coming year.” - [Sahih Muslim]
This simple yet powerful act brings enormous reward. By fasting, we draw closer to Allah and partake in the immense mercy and blessings of this sacred day.
