Do I need to pay Zakat on my cryptocurrency?

As a store of value, cryptocurrencies are liable for Zakat in a similar way to money that you may have in the bank. It is important that you include your crypto assets when calculating the zakat and pay 2.5% of your holdings each year.

Do crypto Zakat contributions fall under Penny Appeal’s 100% Zakat policy?

Yes. If you have noted your crypto donation as being Zakat, 100% of your contribution will go towards those in need in line with our 100% Zakat Policy..

What happens to my crypto donations?

Unless specified otherwise, crypto donations will be converted to British pounds (GBP) and go where is most needed in supporting Penny Appeal’s vital humanitarian work. If you have specified an appeal, your donation will be restricted to that appeal. Likewise, if you have noted your donation is Zakat, it will be restricted to our Zakat appeals.

Which cryptocurrencies do you accept?

We accept most major cryptocurrencies through our partners at The Giving Block. It’s unlikely that you have a cryptocurrency that is not accepted, but if so, please reach out to us at EMAIL ADDRESS and we will gladly assist.

Are crypto donations tax deductible?

You may be eligible for relief on your capital gains tax by making a donation to Penny Appeal, however, you must take advice on this from a tax advisor. At present, crypto donations are not eligible for Gift Aid.
