World Food Day 2024
Addressing Hunger from Yemen to the UK with Penny Appeal
Food is a necessity for everyone. The world at large strives to have food on their tables, be carefree about the next meal and be more concerned about what to eat. On this World Food Day, we’re reminded of millions who don’t have that luxury – people who worry not about their next meal’s variety, but whether they’ll even have one.
Unfortunately, hunger affects millions of people worldwide with women and children being the most affected. According to the 2023 Global Hunger Index, over 735 million people around the world are facing food insecurity. Around 60% of the world’s hungry are women, and approximately one in three children is affected by some form of malnutrition, making them especially vulnerable.
Countries like Yemen, Somalia, and South Sudan are experiencing severe food shortages. In Yemen, more than 17.4 million people are in urgent need of food, while Somalia faces famine, with 1.5 million children at risk of acute malnutrition. These figures show that hunger is more than just a distant problem – it’s a daily reality for millions of people.
For the past one year, our brethren in Gaza have been facing unimaginable horrors-either succumbing to a blast, being buried beneath rubble or dealing with hunger and diseases. It saddens our hearts to say that in a year’s span, 96% Gazans have faced food insecurity and malnutrition, SubhanAllah!
This reality is not just true for developing or underdeveloped countries but it’s also a stark reality for 4 million people in the UK who are struggling with food insecurity, with many being forced to choose between paying their bills or feeding their families.
For all of us at Penny Appeal, our inspiration and dedication to serve selflessly is earned through the wisdom of Qur’an and the Prophet’s (ﷺ) teachings. We believe that no one should go hungry, that’s why we’re on a mission to Feed Our World. With your support, we’ve fed millions of vulnerable people in some of the most poverty-stricken areas of the world and here in the UK with our At Home initiative with our weekly food distribution in Leeds, Wakefield and Bradford.
This World Food Day, Penny Appeal is calling on you to help in the fight against hunger. Whether it's through donating to our UK food initiatives , supporting our Feed Our World campaign or providing aid through Palestine Emergency, your contributions can make a real difference in the lives of those struggling to survive.
