When life hands you oranges, make orangeade!
Viral sensations the LemonAid Boys have teamed up with Penny Appeal to squeeze every last penny into making a big difference for displaced Syrian families.
The boys – 8-year-old best friends Ayaan and Mikaeel – appeared live on Sky News this week to talk about their latest project… selling orangeade to raise money for Penny Appeal!
If you’re not familiar with the LemonAid Boys (or perhaps we should now call them the OrangeAid Boys?) they are two amazing young lads who raised £100,000 for Yemen last year by making and selling lemonade – attracting the attention of celebrities and going viral in the process!
This year, they’ve picked Penny Appeal as their chosen charity, and are selling orangeade to raise money for our Rebuilding Syria campaign, Alhamdulillah. With incredible role models like these, we have high hopes for the younger generation!
Giving back to the community
Yesterday the boys were out in Ilford Town Centre on the Penny Appeal Community Kitchen Food Truck, squeezing freshly made orangeade for the locals – in true Team Orange style – in a bid to raise awareness of Penny Appeal’s work and to give something back during the blessed month of Ramadan.
The Community Kitchen also handed out free food (supplied by the My Lahore restaurant chain) to families in the local area.
When they’re not busy squeezing oranges, Ayaan and Mikaeel have also been running online auctions on their Instagram page to sell cakes to raise further money for the cause.
Local councillor Jas Athwal, who joined us on the day, described the experience as ‘wonderful’.
“An inspiring charity with a great message,” Cllr Athwal later wrote. “Showing how we can all make a huge difference with just small change.”
Penny Appeal’s founder, Adeem Younis, said of Ayaan and Mikaeel: “they’re absolutely amazing young boys; at such tender ages they are aware of how important charity is, and they want to help people far less fortunate than them. We are honoured and privileged that these two brilliant friends have chosen Penny Appeal to team up with and raise much needed funds for the people of Syria”.
And what do the LemonAid Boys themselves have to say?
“We are so excited to have teamed up with Penny Appeal to make orangeade! Penny Appeal’s colour is orange, so it made sense to make orangeade for them this year and raise awareness of their work! We are aiming to raise £5000 to build homes for Syrian people who are living in camps, and we will continue working with them after Ramadan to become official ambassadors!”
