Areeba Bi is 8 years old. In September 2009 her father, who was a labourer, died of kidney failure, leaving Areeba’s mother with no income to pay for food, shelter or education. Areeba and her mother were trapped in poverty, and there was little hope for the future.
In April 2012, Areeba found a new home at Penny Appeal’s Mera Apna Ghar (My Own Home) orphanage in Sohawa, where she now lives with a foster mother and new brothers and sisters. Here she is getting nutritious meals every day, healthcare, an education, clothes and uniform, plus all the daily love and support she needs to realise her ambitions.
Areeba wants to be a doctor when she grows up and is studying hard to achieve that goal.
Her foster mother says: “Areeba is a carefree child and often goes to sleep early. She is in good health and has a good appetite. She is sociable and enjoys playing Ludo and hide and seek.”
Areeba has written a letter of thanks to her sponsors, saying: “I am grateful for everything you have done.”
You can find out more about Areeba and even get to know her favourite things, in her May 2016 Guardian Report.
